The good news is that travelling on La Palma is easy!
With a choice of bus, taxi and rental car - not to mention walking - the choice is yours.
We are often asked if we think a car is essential on La Palma. My answer would be 'no' but there are pro's and con's to either renting a car, using the bus service, taxi or walking.
The bus service is highly reliable and cheap. Buses on La Palma work to a strict timetable - forget the mañana or anytime will do approach! Be at the bus stop in good time or you will miss the bus.
To keep things simple, there are just two prices which are 2€ for journeys of longer than 8km and 1€ for journeys of less than 8km. When it comes to paying, the bus driver accepts cash (try and have the right money) or a Bono card. Bono cards can be a little difficult to come by but are available at the bus station in Los Llanos or ask at the tourist office in Santa Cruz. Some librerias (newspaper shops) sell them so look out for the sign in the window 'Bono aqui.' Bono cards are either 12€ or 20€ and not only save the worry of finding the right change but give a discount on the journey.
Here is the link for the bus timetable - watch out for the red squares and other symbols for Sunday and fiesta days.
The price of taxis is strictly controlled and you will find that the taxis are well maintained vehicles with courteous drivers, although not all speak English.
A company we can highly recommend is Taxi La Palma, run by Gregorio who is highly professional - and speaks English!
For car hire on La Palma, we work with a highly reputable and trusted company who have many years of experience in the business - in fact as far back as 1986. They are also one of the best known car mechanic garages on this island. This ensures that their cars are all kept well serviced and maintained to the highest standard. Their main goal - like ours - is the satisfaction of customers!
We'll be happy to quote you for car rental but a general price for a Hyundai Accent or similar is 130€ per week, taxes, etc included. This also includes our guide to driving on La Palma.
